Skipped Back 10

July 13th, 2009

Our July challenges are: Michael and charity.

The first is another character challenge. Michael Carpenter is a good, spiritual man. A Knight of the Cross, a warrior for God. He's Harry's friend and often his conscience. He is a husband and a father. He is not perfect, but he is as good as anyone could hope to be. (For more description/information than I could provide here, check out this wikipedia entry, but beware spoilers through Small Favor and the short story The Warrior.)

Michael is strictly a book character, but it would be interesting to see him ported over to TV!Verse. (There's no reason you can't do that with any of the characters that never made it onto the show.) Or, of course, you can write book!verse. Either way, what can you explore? His faith or a crisis thereof? A happy moment with his children or an enemy that puts those children in danger? A time when he acts as Harry's confidant or conscience? Maybe even something from his own childhood, or his future.

The other challenge for the month is "charity." You can take this as another character challenge, if you want -- Charity Carpenter is Michael's wife, and a strong character in her own right.

Alternatively, you can use charity as simply the word, rather than as a name. What sort of charity, for example, would Murphy support? Or maybe some group helped Harry and his father when Harry was a kid. Maybe one of them is doing charity work -- despite his financial woes, you know Harry can't ignore a problem even if the people in trouble can't pay.

Charity is also a mindset -- one of "benevolent goodwill toward or love of humanity."

Be good and post your fics by the end of the month. The challenges will be closed and new ones posted on August 1 (or possibly the 2nd, as I'll be out of town that weekend).

As always, if you have suggestions for future challenges, comment here or on any admin post.
The June challenges are belatedly closed, with no takers.

July challenges will be up in a moment.

July 2nd, 2009

Given that I forgot to ask if anyone wanted an extension for the June prompts, I'm granting one - I'll close the June challenges on July 10. You know you want to use your holiday weekend to write. ;)

July prompts will go up today or tomorrow. (Yes, the challenges will overlap.) Stay tuned!

Just a quick reminder that our June challenges are still going on! The challenges for the month are father and sun.

June 8th, 2009

Our June challenges are: father and sun.

Oh yes, I did make a bit of a pun there, didn't I? ;)

Father's Day is this month, so it seemed like a fitting theme! Harry's father was -- and is, and always will be -- very important to him. What sort of Father's Days did they share together? What does he do on that day, or any day, to honor his father now?

What sort of father do you think Harry would make? What about Morgan? Or Bob?

As for Murphy, we've met her father (in the show, at least). Explore her relationship with him, or with the father of her own daughter.

A father could be a client, a victim, or a villain. A father can be a priest, or God. A father can be blood related or not, whether by adoption, marriage, or friendship and love.

The other challenge is sun. (Yes, sun, not son!) Sun is probably the thing we most associate with summer. Brilliant sunlight and scorching heat -- the sun can be both friend and foe. Playing in a sunlit park, tanning on the beach, suffering in the desert... The sun is there in the winter, too, either providing cold light or some warmth on an otherwise chilly day. It peaks out from behind storm clouds, transforming the world.

The sun can be used as a metaphor, too -- a smile as bright as the sun, or heat as hot as its core.

Brighten our days with your stories, but do it by June 30! (Due to the lateness of this post, however, I'll make an extension if someone asks.)

As always, if you have comments or suggestions for future challenges, reply to this or any admin post. :)
Someone really needs to smack me when I forget for a complete week to change out the challenges. Sorry!

The May challenges are now officially closed. Four stories this time! <3

June challenges will be up in a moment!

Just a quick reminder that we have just under a week left for our May challenges! The challenges are Morgan and flower. I'll change out the challenges on June 1st. If you have any suggestions for the coming month, comment here!

Title: White Knight (TVverse)
Characters: Sonia (random OC girl), Morgan
Rating: PG (for some violence)
Prompt: Morgan
Spoilers: None
Word count: 1, 348
Summary: When her boyfriend turns out to be less than knightly, a young woman is saved by a very unusual rescuer.
Author's notes: I came up with this idea for the saviour prompt last month and I could not get it to work in time for the challenge deadline. Fortunately, it works just as well for the Morgan prompt. So, here it is.

When she played pretend, the knight never tried to kill her.Collapse )
